“Color, culture, and quiet power.”

J.O.A

My paintings center on the human figure as a vessel of emotion, memory, and resilience. Using a foundation of realism, I incorporate expressive color, symbolic elements, and painterly movement to create portraits that exist between the physical and the spiritual.

I am JOA : Congo Heart, Global Soul

I wasn’t born into a gallery; I was born into a journey. My story began in the Congo, and that African soul is still the heartbeat of everything I do. I carry a Belgian passport and I’ve been shaped by the mountains of Ecuador, but my ancestral connection is my permanent compass. Every world I’ve lived in has shown me the same thing: the beauty of the human spirit.

The Soul Behind the Brush My art is just an extension of my life as a humanitarian. To me, treating every living being with dignity is a radical act. If my work feels intense, it’s because my passion is. I don’t just paint figures; I paint emotions. In a world that can be harsh and chaotic, I choose bold, unapologetic colors to make things feel light and bright again. It’s my way of defying the shadows.

Why Raw Cloth? People ask why I paint on industrial drop cloth instead of traditional canvas. It’s because I want the "fabric of the people." I love the grit and the history in the fibers. It’s an honest surface, and it’s the only one strong enough to hold the faces I paint. Following my daughter's wish to "paint the world with flowers," I crown my subjects with blooms—symbolizing the resilience of every survivor I depict.

I am JOA. A Congolese soul, a global wanderer, and a storyteller for a world that is a little more human.
