The Story
"Spirit of the Tropics" is a map of my identity. Having been born in the Congo and lived across South America, my soul is tied to the vibrant, raw energy of the tropics. But there is another side to my story that grounds me in Europe.
The Background: My parents live in Portugal, and that landscape is where I feel "at home" on this side of the ocean. I chose the Portuguese tile pattern for the background as a tribute to that living connection. It represents the history and warmth of a place that anchors my family today. By placing the wild spirit of the parrot against the structured beauty of the tiles, I am showing how my African soul and European roots live together in one frame.
The Foundation: I painted this on heavy industrial textile. I love the contrast of placing a traditional, delicate tile pattern onto a fabric that is rough and scarred. It strips away the polish and keeps the work real. It is a reminder that "home" isn't just a pretty picture—it’s built on strength, grit, and the materials of real life.
